A Good Relationship With My Father - 892 Words

The first time my father yelled at me I was six years old. I mean really raised his voice. My father had never used that kind of a tone with me before so naturally I was equally surprised as scared. As I grew older and connected events I realized my father had been upset, not because I was out of bed late at night, but because my mother had been discussing their separation that night. Up until the age of six I had an ideal relationship with my father, I suppose as normal as any other six year old child could have with their parents. I won’t try to argue that in order to have a good relationship with another human you have to live in the same house as they do or even in the same state or country, but the farther you are the more difficult it will be to obtain an ideal relationship or connection with that person. A good relationship can be defined in multiple ways and each person has their own take on it. I believe that to truly have a good, grounded, relationship with someone y ou need to be able to trust that person, enjoy their company, and accept the person for who they are. In a genuine relationship two people should be able to trust each other, to not have any doubt in the other person. Trust is the key component to a healthy relationship and it provides a sense of safety which allows for higher levels of intimacy (Colleen Ekback). Depending on who the other person is, may it be a parent, sibling, another relative or a significant other, the doubtfulness will differ.
